Terms of Service

Last updated: March 15, 2026

By accessing or using CleanFile (cleanfile.app), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the service. These terms apply to all users of the website and the Progressive Web App.

1. Service description and scope

CleanFile provides browser-based metadata inspection and cleanup tools for supported file types. The service processes files locally in your web browser using client-side JavaScript. CleanFile is provided as a free utility tool. Features may be added, changed, improved, or removed over time as the product evolves. CleanFile is not a certified data sanitization tool, a legal compliance solution, or a substitute for professional security review. It is designed to help individual users remove common metadata fields from files before sharing.

2. Acceptable use

You may use CleanFile for any lawful purpose consistent with these terms. You may not: • Use the service in any way that is illegal, fraudulent, or harmful. • Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or overload the service infrastructure. • Use automated scripts, bots, or crawlers to access the service in a way that degrades performance for other users. • Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or extract the source code through unauthorized means. • Misrepresent the capabilities or results of the service in a way that could mislead others.

3. No warranty and disclaimer

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. We aim for accuracy and reliability across all supported file formats, but we do not guarantee that: • Every file format, device variant, or metadata field will be handled perfectly in every case. • The service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. • All metadata will be detected or removed from every possible file variation. Users should verify cleaned files independently before using them in sensitive, regulated, or high-stakes scenarios.

4. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, CleanFile and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service. This includes but is not limited to damages for loss of data, privacy breaches resulting from incomplete metadata removal, or business interruption. Our total liability for any claim arising from the service shall not exceed the amount you paid for the service (which is zero for the free tier).

5. Your responsibility

You are responsible for: • Verifying that cleaned files meet your requirements before sharing them, especially in sensitive or regulated workflows. • Maintaining backups of original files before processing. • Ensuring that your use of the service complies with applicable laws in your jurisdiction. • Understanding that metadata removal reduces privacy risk but is not a guarantee of complete data sanitization. CleanFile is a tool to assist with metadata removal, not a substitute for comprehensive security review.

6. Intellectual property

The CleanFile name, logo, website design, and source code are the property of their respective owners unless otherwise stated. You may not use the CleanFile brand, trademarks, or design assets without written permission. Files you process through CleanFile remain your property. We claim no ownership or rights over the content of files you process using the service.

7. Third-party services

CleanFile may integrate or link to third-party services for hosting, analytics, or advertising. These services are subject to their own terms of service and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the practices or content of third-party services.

8. Modifications to service and terms

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the service (or any part of it) at any time without prior notice. We may also update these Terms of Service as the product evolves. Continued use of the service after changes to these terms are published on this page constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. If you disagree with any changes, your remedy is to stop using the service.

9. Governing law

These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of the service will be resolved in the appropriate jurisdiction.

10. Severability

If any provision of these terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
